Meet Story, Sip, & Song
My favorite things, shaken or stirred, and served to you...
A few years ago, I got fed up with the “mommy needs her wine” trope. It seemed every meme or printed tank top wanted us, the moms, to know the only way to get through our day was with that hopeful glass of wine waiting on the other side. I mean, they weren’t wrong. My nightly pour from the $5 Trader Joe's bottles never disappointed me. But it also didn’t fulfill me. I noticed this narrative was not only toxic to women with real struggles of depression and abuse, but it denied me, and others like me, the opportunity to take control of our own mental health journey, one that didn’t have to include just wine but also the strength of exercise and meditation, the escape in reading and entertainment, the joy in laughter and a good facial and an awesome denim jacket.
And...maybe, sometimes...it could include a really good drink.
Here is the truth about me: I am not ashamed to have a drink. I love wine with my pasta and beer with my pizza. I love cocktails on girls’ night and champagne to celebrate.
But our culture ruined this experience for me when it told me alcohol only served the purpose of numbing the difficult emotions of life.
I didn’t want that for myself anymore. I also didn’t want them taking away what I love. It was time to re-frame the narrative of what supported my mental health.
This is how Cocktail Fridays were born.
I stopped having my “just because” nightly glass of wine, saving my drinks for the weekend. Friday became my “breaking of the fast.” But not in a TGIF sort of way, but rather to be creative and celebratory and joy filled. I bought the nice bottles of gin and bourbon and liqueurs that intrigued me. I infused simple syrups and played with garnishes. I poured over cocktail books and masterclasses in mixology, ever on the hunt for inspiration. I had fun mixing up a really good cocktail.
But then, I had even more fun sharing that joy with you!
Welcome to my cocktail account Story, Sip, & Song!
For the last three years I have enjoyed exploring the mixology world with my cocktail account on instagram. As I learned what I loved, I honed in my creative project even more when I started pairing cocktails with stories and songs, my other two loves. And now, with the mystery that is Instagram, I decided it was time to bring my cocktails more regularly to this lovely corner of the internet. I’ll still be posting video to instagram because I love that part of it, too. But in case you’re a person who likes her cocktails served in a quieter bar, pull up a chair. I’d love to make something for you.
Follow along, learn a new cocktail, and share with me your own creations. Let’s be creative, fill our glasses with joy, and take back the narrative, one cocktail at a time.
Cheers!🥂
